A fun, world travelling Oakville couple called us in to update their large home. The initial process was fairly extensive with new furniture added to the formal living room, a complete re-working of the family room fireplace, several new area rugs and window coverings, and a paint colour consultation which led to repainting the entire home. Below, left, is the original living room, and on the right, is what it looks like now.
The transitional style design approach brought in new pieces which had a dramatic look but kept elements of traditional style. The cream sofa and loveseat in the living room has classic button tufting but it and the piping are done in an espresso leather. The 100% wool area carpet has a relaxed rambling tree branch motif in soft cream and gold. Custom draperies have an all over fretwork embroidery in a classic trellis pattern. The sheers have a lead line along the bottom rather than a heavy hem.
A rich earth tone wall colour started in the kitchen to enhance the existing kitchen cabinetry and was carried throughout the home. In the dining room we added custom silk draperies in a shimmering silver taupe shade which added glamour to the wall colour. A striking area carpet in 100% wool in a flowing abstract motif was added. The white washed tones of the existing dining room furniture were greatly enhanced by the soft shades in the area rug. A modern chandelier in brushed nickel was also added. Beautifully custom framed artwork from the client’s own collection added rich colour to the gentle colour palette of the dining room, lending an air of completion.
A lot of work went into the family room with a complete redo of the gas fireplace. The existing builder’s fireplace was encased in a wood mantel under a crescent shaped window. This window was insulated and covered by the new floor to ceiling stone clad mantel. The new longitudinal style contemporary gas fireplace unit is of a much higher BTU rating so the clients are much cozier on a cold winter’s evening. The linear style of the new unit lends a contemporary touch to the new room. Rather than conventional logs in the firebox, we opted for contemporary styling there, too, with crushed glass and a layer of beach pebbles. The existing window valance was removed and the classic white window shutters were left to stand alone. New lighting, repurposed artwork from the client’s collection, new coffee and end tables, and a subtle area carpet in 100% wool with a raised circle motif were also added. Photos shown below show the original fireplace with window above, as well as the original area carpet, media unit and coffee table.
Photos below show the renovation of the fireplace in progress.
Once the fireplace was completed new furniture, artwork, lighting, and area carpet could be added.
In the kitchen we replaced the original backsplash tile with a dramatic slim lined glass and burnished copper tile.
The master bath received a new Cambria counter top, classy square vessel sinks and faucets, and the vanity was refreshed.
This master bathroom/ bedroom has a two way gas fireplace. It got an update also with natural stone cladding on the bedroom side.
Even the home office got an update with new broadloom, furniture and placement of artwork.
A few extra small touches here and there, and voila!
Yes, a renovation is a little like an invasion, but the results are worth it.
Our lovely clients were kind enough to write a nice review for us on Homestars.com. :
