Televisions are not going away any time soon. Pretty much everybody has one, or two or more. In fact, they are getting bigger. They are also more like computers now than they were in the past. So how do we incorporate such a large object into the main living area without in looking silly and dominating the room? Televisions are not actually ugly. They have become sleek and very slim. They have decor mojo. They are in subtle, receding black. Black looks good in many interior design schemes anyway. The television definitely will stand out if it’s the only black object in the room. Likely there will be other black objects present.
Many clients install the television in a renovated basement family room. They are able to have a very large television in that large, out of the way space. The enormity of the television is not intrusive in that situation. In the more formal, main living areas, there may or may not be a second television. If so, there are ways to make it less intrusive. In the room below, the tall fireplace is clad in charcoal coloured stone, with black slate below. The adjacent large television is balanced with the dark colours used on the fireplace surround.
The grey sofas in the room above and the black area carpet and end table present a balanced colour scheme that shows everything in the room to an advantage. It is easy to see the television as well as the fireplace from every seat. Similarly, but in a very different style, in the room below, the television is mounted on a decorative wall with lighted niches. The ceiling is enhanced in a similar way. It is a dramatic and masculine room. The height and size of the television allow for easy and comfortable viewing.
In the great room below, the ceiling height , tall windows and formal furniture distract the eye much more than the relatively large television does. The square ottoman is very large so the television is balance by it. The tall custom draperies and the tall, white fireplace surround catch the eye first and then we are drawn around the room to the many other elements present. The television is a non issue in a room of this size.
A very symmetrical design approach with a very large, linear fireplace as a main design element can balance a large television. In the room below, balanced, lighted niches add further impact. Large storage drawers are inconspicuous and hide whatever other equipment the room contains. overall, the look is dramatic, very eye-catching, and the room is comfortable. 
In a more colourful approach, a very botanical green accompanied by crisp white make a fun colour scheme that draws the eye away from the television. The black of the television is by far the largest black object in the room. It is not, however, the only black object, though. It is balanced by several small black accessories and a black and white artwork. The white elements have a real look about them, especially the chairs. There’s a sense of contemporary fun in this room.
We are living in an age of industrial retro fun. In the loft space below, the large television is mounted on a metal easel. That on its’ own would be underwhelming. The adjacent charcoal and white triptych artwork standing on a distressed metal cabinet are lit by overhead Edison lamps. The paired retro leather chaises add a final touch of fun while creating a comfortable place to lounge. There is a lot of black in this room, but most of it is distressed surfaces. The wall colour is a dark neutral which relates to the leather loungers and adds balance and grounding. With so many interesting object in the room, the television is simply a part of the whole scenario.
