Who doesn’t love relaxing at the beach or the cottage? There’s an easy-going look to coastal style, no matter where you find your getaway. Beach or cottage inspired home decor is easy to live with and easy to change a little if some aspects become a little kitschy. Most often, cottage or beach inspired decor leads us toward pastel, neutral or white wall colours, but there is plenty of scope for gold, navy and coral, as well. Traditionally, coastal decor was mainly blue and white. That is still a current coastal or beachy look, but Wait! There’s more!
Beach cottage style calls for painted shiplap or beadboard panelling on walls and ceilings, or just as an accent. It lends cozy rusticity, refined by paint. Even a downtown dining room can emit a coastal vibe. Your home may not even be anywhere near the water, unless you can manage your day job and all the other tasks we all get up to in a day. There’s no need to feel deprived of a little beachy atmosphere if you add in some of the architectural elements of coastal style to your city home.Add a touch of wicker, some gauzy curtains, coastal motif fabrics in soft blue and white, and some textural accessories and the look is well on its’ way. Weathered wood and rattan in a light and bright room create a calming oasis.Beach glass vases with netting overlaid can begin a vignette that sets the scene. Rattan blinds and a soft, weathered paint palette are easy care and fun to live with. Found elements, of course, are part of the scheme. Today’s distressed look area rugs suit this look perfectly, along with pale, natural woods. Funky finds gathered when walking on the beach lend charm and become sentimental treasures. The look changes and evolves as you find things.
